I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Local Council for the splendid way they dealt with this years first snowfall (first real one in 10 years here*) despite their miserable failure to act over the Xmas cold snap.
By 10am yesterday all the major city roads were clear as were many minor ones. By lunchtime they had gangs of up to 20 workmen shovelling and brushing 2-3 inches of snow off the High St. pavements and 3 other major shopping streets. Hopefully after then gritting the pavements those who venture out this morning will not be faced with the black ice that they had in late December.
Also an excellent job done by the local radio stations who scared most folk into staying at home yesterday, notably school staff and pupils** (together wih a majority in the public sector) and probably today as well thus leaving the roads clear for those few of us who want to use them.

*definition of 'real snow' = widespread appearance of proper lifesize snowpersons, not token ones made of glorified frost.
** to be fair to the state schools, the private ones also closed at lunchtime; the parents who pay for the privilege expect their monies worth so they won't have done that lightly.

I did read 2 to 3 inches didn't I ? They took two weeks to clean it up ? Where I live (just down the road from where the Donner Party ate each other) we measure snow in feet, and it's cleaned up the same day and as it's falling. The last storm was 3 feet. We don't get a lot of black ice, though ... thank God.
Yes Woodstie you did read right. 2-3 inches of snow are a big deal when it part thaws then re-freezes to create a cobblestone effect for the old dears going shopping and at the emergency department.
So much for global warming. You guys got a lot of snow---that isn't normal is it or could this be the beginning of a new ice age!
You're lucky your pavements have been cleared Banned, ours haven't. In fact I had to send my wife out to clear the drive, we couldn't get the car out.
Nice to see a council actually doing their jobs for once! I guess they must have plentiful supplies of salt and grit?
Ah, well. Gordoom has a plan for that...
They're not too bad in our area. It just had to be Hilarious Benn's fault that we'd run out of grit!
Living as I do in a small, exclusive, private enclave, we didn't get the benefit of the council's grit lorries despite paying huge fucking Band H taxes to them. So the cars are barricaded in garages piled with drifts and we have to ski down the driveway to the public roads. I had to take the bus (yes, public fucking transport) to get to Waitrose to panic buy. There was only me on the bus and the monosyllabic cunt of a driver so it felt more like being chauffeured.
Waitrose, by the way, was like a scene from some film about Armageddon. I had to kick one old dear in the crotch when she tried to grab the last bottle of gin, the boozy cunt.
I found out where all the fucking milk went last Wedesday, from a lady who works for Sainsburys.
Seems all the country dwellers , with memories of being snowed in for weeks at a time, decended like Attila The Hun to grab milk and bread by the pallet load leaving us poor city folk to sing for our supper.
Hi Banned, I'm happy they got things cleared out for you. The snow has been bad in Chicago too, but not as bad as some places. I guess the global warming is really taking it's toll, stay warm and Have fun building a snow man.
Hi Banned:
Stopped by to say "hi". Hope you're keeping warm. This global warming has really put the freeze on all of us. Even here in Florida we are hitting record lows and the fruit crops are freezing. I've had to cover plants at night and there were snow flurries reported south of us in Naples, FL.
Brrrrr....
Hi Bunni and Conservative Lady; our pavements (sidewalks US) remained clear despite many days of sub-zero temps, they have now cleared entirely with a bit of rain but OMG, the Met Office threatened us with 8 inches of more Snow for Sunday, that changed ( in retrospect which they like ) to Monday and then last night.
Fuck me, it arrived today and closed the highway 20 miles southwest of here and then the next town down the road and finally the big hill out of town.
Here though I think we'll just get a load of slushy rain. The farmer told me so.
