You know, like this one

which we've all got 2 or 3 of kicking around the kitchen; boring and reliable, been using for years so how come they don't work anymore? Not just mine but also the one at my mums house.
I saw a different one at Tesco the other day, it only cost a quid but hey, that doesn't work either. Come on Tesco, I don't mind paying a bit more for one that fucking works!
Any suggestions other than trying the Disability Warehouse where they probably sell special ones?
Apologies for recently being AWOL; having a spot of back pain difficulty which our good old NHS is being tardy in sorting out meanwhile recommending an assortment of over the counter pills that either make you feel like shite or mush your brain out; either way the motivation to blog or even keep up to date with the news is much diminished.
Thank you for those that left kind comments.

Banned, I've noticed that with the can openers out here too. You put in the drawer, and when you need it, if the electric one is on the blink, it won't work. It's a conspiracy when we have to live off the land, the damn can openers won't work.
Sorry to hear you've been under the weather. I hope your back is better very soon, and don't worry about the motivation, take care of yourself. Have a lovely weekend too.
Hi Banned.
Good to have you back online. All sympathies with the back pain, hope they sort you out soon.
We've had a Brabantia can opener for years and years, never fails. Google "Brabantia Classic Can Opener", they only cost a fiver or so.
I don't know if there's still an old style can opener in our kitchen - I will have a look. Maybe the shape of the tins have changed?
Sorry to hear about your back pain - I know exactly what it's like. Pills are only of limited use - I tried several "alternative" remedies, and now see a chiropractor regularly. This seems to do far more good.
Good to see you back.
Banned, I don't know what to tell you. They seem to work fine here. Are your cans getting a more recessed lid over there? It's a conspiracy by the governments so you have to buy their new and UN approved openers. Oh my god we'll all starve .... LOL
Hi all, well I've been using those old basic 'butterfly' can openers since I was in The Scouts but my J. Sainsbury (UK Supermarket) lady friend told me this morning that "they" had indeed recently changed the lippage on tin cans for nefarious reasons of their own so well done Bunni and microdave for spotting it.
Blind Pugh, thanks for your comment; I tried to click your profile but blogger insisted that you were not to be found(?).
Woodsterman Ah, yes, the Recessed Lid ploy once again. They take us for fools.
Hi Banned.
I wanted summat I could sign comments with on blogs without giving away any info online (paranoid little cunt that I am). Hence the profile doesn't show anything. I'm not a blogger like you, not having the wit, intelligence and boiling spleen required to be as entertaining as you and many others I read. Your jottings do fairly brighten my dull little life so more power to your elbow (and back). And many of your posts have given me a great deal to think about, especially the ClimateGate shit. Please keep it up.
I ventured down the financially challenged end of the High Street, found the Brewhouse & Cookshop which sold me the 'update' tin opener as above and is also furtively selling proper lightbulbs (not yet illegal but highly frowned upon), bit of a result really.
Well done, Mr Banned, especially the finding of the proper lightbulbs. We tried the "energy efficient" kind and that's what sent me blind, fucking useless crap. We tried to lay in a store of carbon-hungry incandescents before the ban but were beaten to it by the ravening hordes of pensioners in our local PoundStretcher.
Good to have you back, Sir.
Re "proper" lightbulbs. Anthony Watts of "WUWT" has been trying the latest LED replacement lights with some success. Bloody expensive, but seemingly far superior to CFL's.

md, they still haven't told us what to do with the mercury which is a byproduct of so called energy efficient lightbulbs.
Actually ALL fluorescent lamps contain mercury, and always have - for donkeys years. But I guess it's only in these more "environmentally aware" times that anyone has started worrying about it.
The older tubes used to have some very nasty beryllium based phosphor coatings, which could prove serious if you cut yourself on a broken one, but as far as I'm aware they have been outlawed.
Old farts like me can remember playing with a bowl of mercury in science lessons at school. It always got spilt on the lab floor, and was a bugger to pick up!
Most of us walk around with mercury containing dental fillings, so we are all doomed anyway...
Speaking from experience, I have sympathy with your back problem, mate - the sort of pain that never lets you forget it's there.
I have one from a german company, and I got it I don't know... 4 years ago, and it is still functionable. It has some rust around but it still cuts the cans. Anyway… you can still try to open a can with the knife… dangerous but it works.
