Insurance companies know that young women are 25 times less likely to have a serious car accident than young men (and are less likely to kill someone when they do) because they tend not to drive like crazed maniacs bigging up their testosterone levels as the boys do.
Insurance companies know this because of their actuaries. These are the folks who tot up all the figures and come out with the facts. Harmons law though makes it illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender so charging young women less to insure their cars than young men is now illegal. Cheers Harriet, what a great legacy you left for the sisters. I expect that it is also now illegal to say that women have nicer tits.

Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm just old fashioned but I believe that to say men and women are equal is utter nonsense, they're useful for far more things and they fart less too. Or at least they do it in private or in their sleep when I'm already out for the count.

The Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007 make passing reference to the insurance industry but the current situation is due to an intermim opinion from the ECJ, The European Court of Justice (N.B. not the ECHR), which interprets the Lisbon Treaty.
At the end of 2010 the Advocate General Kokott put forward her opinion that companies such as Sheila's Wheels were incompatible with fundamental provision in the Lisbon Treaty which require services to be offered on a non-discriminatory basis.
It remains to be seen whether this opinion will be supported by the full court (usually it is but opinions have been ignored before now) and exemptions be gradually withdrawn.

We have reached the point where, for instance, if a taxi driver aids and assists someone with their luggage because they are disabled he will then be obliged to offer the same level of assistance to everybody else or face charges of Discrimination.
